How Socially Responsible are Tobacco companies?

Today more and more companies are getting into Corporate Social Responsibility.
However, I always wonder just how many of them are truly serious about making their operations socially responsible.
One such group of companies are the tobacco companies. How can a corporate company even claim to be socially responsible if all its activities are around creating a product that is known to cause serious illnesses and ultimately kill?!
Lessons from NOT running the London Marathon…
This April, I was due to finally run the London marathon.
I even wrote in January about how to run your own marathon in 2007.
See, I have wanted to run the London marathon for a long time and it looked like this year, on 22nd April, I was finally going to achieve one of my life long ambitions.
Walk the talk - don’t eat too much sugar!
I have just had my evening supper and have finally emptied my fridge of all food. My fridge has never been emptier - and my food cupboards are almost bare too.
Having just written about eating well and saving the earth, I must walk the talk!
Make Time to Smell the Flowers!
It has been another beautiful Spring day here in London - and it seems like we are in for another scorching summer. At least the infamous dull weather in London has been changed thanks to global warming. So perhaps global warming is not so bad after all:-)
Strive for excellence – tips for Asian Women and all Women

I recently had another article published in a magazine aimed at Asian women, a magazine appropriately called “Asian Woman”. How about that for a targetted niche?
Though my article was aimed at the Asian women readership, it actually applies to all women:-
Our world today is more competitive than ever before. From children competing to get into the best schools to women battling to prove themselves in the boardroom, it is clear excellence is what counts.
Eat well and Save the Earth!
Last week, there was a disturbing report about how UK households are dumping a third of all the food they buy. Incredible isn’t it?
In light of all the problems we face today such as global warming, scare resources, pollution, simply by cutting out our food wastage we can all make a huge impact on our world.
How to be a Cool Dad!
Every now and then I come across a cool website which I just have to share with you.
A couple of days ago, out of the blue, I heard from James Eves and he shared with me his vision of how to be a cool dad!
It takes just a minute to light up the world!

A few weeks ago I wrote about how you could transform your world in just a minute.
“Just-a-Minute” (JAM) is a dynamic new campaign to create personal peace, launched by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. It introduces regular one-minute periods of silence into people’s lives, whether stressed out city executives, busy mums, high profile public figures - or even prolific writers
They have now produced a clever and beautiful video clip to show how easy it is for everyone of us to get peace in our lives and spread our light.
Turn up your speakers, sit back and enjoy:-

Put an end to evil packaging
Are you concerned about the amount of excessive packaging our food comes in nowadays?
I have just had lunch and it is simply amazing how much packaging our food comes in nowadays. As I already recycle as much as possible, I am wondering what else I could be doing.
Life is full of delights…just be open to it
A couple of days ago, I had lunch with some new international friends. As a gift, they brought along the most divine Turkish delight sweets, all the way from Istanbul.
Spring time means clutter clearing time!
Spring is here!
I am writing this from a beautifully sunny day in central London. Isn’t it funny how I tend to describe the weather, even though I know that the weather is just weather!
So as we look forward to longer, brighter days, it is time to clear out the clutter from your life. Before you can start to get a life, you need to have a clear out - a space in which to create something significant. You must clear out all those things from the past that are holding you back in order to move forward.
Let us make “Kunta Kinte” proud of his legacy
Today is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.
Various events are taking place around London and the UK to mark the end of this abhorrent practice. Though it was in 1807 that the slave trade finally became illegal, it was not until 1833 that slaves were granted their freedom.
Whilst the debate goes on about reparations, it is really time to look at how we treat others in our society today.
Let as much light into your life as you can!
A couple of weeks I wrote about the hilarious episode of scaffolding being put up against the wrong building. As I said at the time, sometimes you just have to laugh!, and this post amused a lot of readers out there.
Anyway, the scaffolding has now been moved to my home and the roof has been examined for leaks. As it turns out the roof is indeed sound and the leak seems to be coming from some internal piping after all. So it turns out that the scaffolding will not be needed for any roof repair work and the whole exercise was rather fortuitous.
How do you and your company communicate with the world?
This morning I searched around on the internet for some possible suppliers for one of my new projects (more details soon).
I typed in my search criteria in Google as one does and chose to call the first three companies that caught my eye and who also seemed to offer what I wanted. I discarded a couple as they were clearly USA orientated. Here is what happened with the three companies I called:-
Red Nose Day - a day for giving!

Today is red nose day!
A day to be zany and to do fun things all in a good cause. The sillier you are, the more money you can raise - and bring a smile to the faces of those around you and also children in far off lands who will ultimately benefit.
Is it Christmas already?!
This is one of my house plants which has just flowered in the last week and has some most beautiful but delicate pinkish white flowers. What a great way to celebrate Spring which is here for sure.
Peace or Trident in our time?
Today in the House of Commons the British Parliament will discuss plans to renew the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons system.
MPs will debate the £20bn plan to replace the submarines which carry the Trident missiles. Between £15bn and £20bn would be spent on new submarines to carry the Trident missiles and the fleet would take 17 years to develop and build, and would then last until about 2050. Oh and maintenance of the fleet is estimated to be a mere £50bn during that time.
Be careful of what you ask for!

In my story about the carrot, the egg and the coffee beans, way back in January, I wrote about how we should all strive to be “coffee” in 2007.
Well, my wish has literally come true!
