Mother Teresa's joyous smile

It is ten years today since Mother Teresa passed away amongst her favourite people – the dying and destitute of Calcutta.

As she passed away the same week as Princess Diana, it seemed at the time that her passing away was hardly noticed. Yet, here was an amazing human being who spent decades helping the lonely, the poor and the dying in the worst possible environment for such humanity.

When she was alive, Mother Teresa was called a “living saint” and she even received the Nobel Peace prize in 1979. She accepted the award, but asked that the award ceremony be cancelled and the money instead given towards her work in Calcutta.

Ten years down the line, what would she make of the world today? We have more war, famine, diease than ever before. 9/11 changed forever the world she left behind and aids is still rampant, especially in Africa and her beloved India.

She believed in giving your best no matter what and in a world of abundance for all.

So what would her message be to us today? She would no doubt want us to continue with her work, remain hopeful and believe in positive change. She would want us to follow the example she set us in helping those less fortunate than us.

We all have to continue to believe in our own capacity for good, love and ultimate world peace. And to keep us going, we have some very apt words from her:-

“We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little,we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.”
