Heron in Regents Park

After talking about penguins and giraffes recently, today it is the turn of the humble Heron.

I spotted the Heron above in Regents Park last summer at the height of the heat wave. As we are now snowed under, does anyone out there now regret cursing the heat?!

Like penguins and giraffes, the Heron too has plenty of lessons to teach us. He is simply standing there and speculating on who this weird creature was in front of him, wielding a Canon digital camera. He was also probably smirking deep down – as he can fly and how I wish I could too.

Notice how he stands there, meditating and without a care in the world. He is not fretting about being late to get somewhere else or wanting to get on with some job. As far as I know, he has no mortgage payments to worry about nor has he any relationship hangups. He is not even worried about his next meal – there are enough tourists coming to gawk at his lofty perch amongst the Regents Park trees and feeding titbits though they are not supposed to.

Ok – I know what you are thinking now – we can’t all be Herons, someone has to be a human.

You may not be a Heron in this lifetime, but in this lifetime you can certainly be a HERO.

So next time you wish you were a Heron or someone else , remember that you are already a HERO and a superhero is just waiting to metamorphise from you. Just give him or her a chance.

And what about the humble Heron?

It is best to leave Bette Midler to pay a fitting tribute to the Heron via her famous song – “You are my HERON”

Sing along!

(It is funny how the lyrics are so apt for our Heron the Hero 🙂 )

Ohhhh, oh, oh, oh, ohhh.
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that’s your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you’re my HERON,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I’ve got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you’re my HERON?
You’re everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you’re my HERON?
You’re everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
’cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
